Who is Focalor?
Focalor (also spelled Forcalor or Furcalor) is the 41st spirit in the Ars Goetia, a grimoire section of the 17th-century Lesser Key of Solomon. Described as a mighty Duke of Hell, he appears as a man with griffin wings or sometimes as a monstrous griffin. He commands 29 or 30 legions of spirits and is associated with powers like:
- Destroying enemies by drowning them or causing storms at sea.
- Overthrowing warships and granting invisibility.
- Teaching rhetoric, arts, sciences, and secrets of the past and future.
Historically, these texts stem from medieval demonology, blending Jewish, Christian, and occult traditions. Summoning rituals are symbolic or psychological tools in Western esotericism, not literal magic. Modern practitioners often view them as meditative or archetypal exercises rather than supernatural acts.
Proceed with caution: these are intense psychological rituals that can evoke strong emotions or altered states.
Preparation for the Ritual
Before attempting any evocation, preparation is key to safety and focus. The Ars Goetia emphasizes purity and protection.
Mental and Physical Preparation
- Fast for 24 hours or eat lightly (no meat, alcohol, or stimulants).
- Bathe in saltwater or herbal infusion (e.g., hyssop, rosemary) for purification.
- Meditate daily for 7–9 days on your intent (e.g., seeking knowledge from Focalor).
- Visualize a protective circle of white light around you.
Gather Materials
- A quiet, dimly lit room with no distractions.
- Black mirror, scrying crystal, or white candle for manifestation.
- Incense: Frankincense, myrrh, or sea salt (Focalor’s watery domain).
- Virgin parchment or paper, black ink, and a quill.
- Protective talisman: Draw the Seal of Solomon (a hexagram) or Focalor’s sigil (a complex glyph resembling a winged figure with waves).
- Robes: White linen for purity.
- Sword or wand: For tracing the circle (symbolic; a stick works).
Timing
Perform during Focalor’s planetary hour: Wednesday (Mercury) at dawn or midnight, ideally during a waxing moon for manifestation.
The Summoning Ritual (Evocation from Ars Goetia)
This is a condensed adaptation of the traditional evocation. It’s not “guaranteed” to summon anything literal—results vary by belief and intent. Always prioritize consent and ethics; “commanding” spirits can backfire psychologically.
Step 1: Create the Protective Circle
- On the floor, draw a 9-foot circle using flour, chalk, or salt. Inside, inscribe a triangle (the “Triangle of Art”) pointing east.
- Around the circle, write the names of power: Adonai, Elohim, Jah, Tetragrammaton (YHWH), and the archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel.
- Place the triangle outside the circle, facing it. Put Focalor’s sigil in the triangle’s center.
- Stand in the circle facing east. Light incense and the candle.
Step 2: Preliminary Invocation (LBRP – Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram)
To clear energies:
- Face east, trace a banishing pentagram in the air with your wand/sword while vibrating: “YHVH” (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh).
- Repeat for south (“Adonai”), west (“Eheieh”), north (“AGLA”).
- Invoke archangels: “Before me Raphael, behind me Gabriel…” etc.
- End with: “For about me flames the pentagram, and in the column stands the six-rayed star.”
Step 3: Conjuration of Focalor
Hold the sigil and chant the First Conjuration (adapted from the Goetia):
“I do invocate and conjure thee, O Spirit Focalor; and being with power armed from the Supreme Majesty, I do strongly command thee, by Beralanensis, Baldachiensis, Paumachia, and Apologiae Sedes; by the most Powerful Princes, Genii, Liachidae, and Ministers of the Tartarean Abode; and by the Chief Prince of the Seat of Apologia in the Ninth Legion, I do invoke thee, and by invocating conjure thee. And being armed with power from the Supreme Majesty, I do strongly command thee, by Him Who spake and it was done, and unto whom all creatures be obedient… Appear thou now before this Circle in a fair human shape, without any deformity or tortuosity. Come thou in and from any quarter of the world, peaceably and quietly, to answer my questions truly and without any falsehood.”
If no manifestation, repeat with increasing intensity, vibrating Focalor’s name:
“FO-CA-LOOOOR!”
Step 4: Manifestation and Communication
- Gaze into the triangle/mirror. Signs of presence: wind, water sounds, temperature drop, or visions of a winged man/griffin.
- Once appeared, state your intent clearly (e.g., “Focalor, reveal the secrets of [specific knowledge]”).
- Offer libation: pour wine or seawater into a bowl in the triangle as tribute.
- Ask questions one at a time. Journal responses (visions, words, feelings).
Step 5: License to Depart and Closing
- When done: “I thank thee, Focalor, for thy presence. Depart in peace, harming none, and return when called again.”
- Extinguish candle counterclockwise. Erase the circle from east to west.
- Perform LBRP again to banish.
- Ground yourself: eat bread/salt, walk barefoot.
Warnings and Modern Perspectives
Risks
Unprepared rituals can induce paranoia, sleep issues, or “entity attachments” (often psychological). If you feel overwhelmed, stop and seek therapy.
Ethics
Treat as a dialogue, not domination. Misuse (e.g., harm) invites backlash per lore.
Alternatives
Many today use chaos magic—print the sigil, charge it with meditation, then “forget” it.
