Lodowick Muggleton’s theological treatise confronts the biblical episode in which Saul consults the Witch of Endor. Rejecting the belief that Samuel’s spirit physically returned, Muggleton interprets the event through conscience, imagination and his sect’s distinctive understanding of body and soul. The work occupies a strange border between anti-necromantic argument and visionary theology. Its pages return repeatedly to the forbidden question at the chamber’s centre: when the dead appear to speak, what exactly has answered?
