This 1869 volume answers critics of Upham’s history of Salem and focuses especially on Cotton Mather’s responsibility during the crisis. Through close argument over sermons, letters and trial narratives, Upham contests efforts to soften the minister’s role in the culture that sustained spectral evidence. Its intensity shows that Salem’s shadow did not end with the trials; generations later, the archive itself remained a contested chamber in which reputations were summoned and judged.
