The Benedictine scholar Augustin Calmet assembled this monumental eighteenth-century inquiry into spirits, apparitions, possession, revenants and vampires. Biblical interpretation stands beside reported cases from across Europe as Calmet weighs fraud, error and supernatural possibility without easily dismissing any category. The English edition preserves one of the foundational sources of vampire scholarship. Across its crowded testimony, the dead seem never entirely absent; they wait at the edge of evidence, asking whether the grave is truly a sealed door.
