John M. Taylor’s early twentieth-century study examines witchcraft prosecutions in colonial Connecticut between 1647 and 1697. Using court records and local history, it documents accusations and executions that are often eclipsed by Salem. The volume shows how English demonology and colonial law crossed the Atlantic and entered small communities already strained by uncertainty. Its restrained record is haunting precisely because the machinery appears ordinary: statutes, depositions and dates marking the places where fear was granted an official voice.
