Unclean spirits are defined by what their presence does to boundaries. They enter, afflict, distort speech and turn human bodies into places from which another will attempts to act.
This record follows the presence through the traditions that preserved its name. Ancient sources, later commentaries and occult interpretations do not always reveal an identical form, yet the same current remains visible beneath their differences: a power recognized by what changes when it draws near.
Name and Identity
The Gospel term does not identify one species or personal name. It describes a broad hostile class whose impurity is active, mobile and capable of recognizing sacred authority.
The name also survives as Impure Spirits, Pneumata Akatharta, Defiling Spirits. These forms belong to the same entry unless a separate historical identity can be demonstrated.
The Oldest Record
Across Mark, Matthew and Luke, unclean spirits cry out, convulse, bargain and depart under command. Their reactions reveal intelligence, fear and attachment to embodiment.
The oldest testimony does more than place a frightening being in the past. It establishes a territory, a hierarchy and a pattern of danger that later generations continued to recognize under changing names.
Nature and Dominion
They govern possession, defilement, compulsive speech, bodily affliction and the crossing of boundaries between wilderness, death and inhabited life.

The accumulated tradition should not be mistaken for one frozen doctrine. Each period exposes another aspect of the entity while preserving the central force by which it is known.
Manifestation
Their manifestation varies with the host: altered voices, impossible strength, sudden knowledge, animal-like movement or a room that becomes hostile before any visible sign appears.
A manifestation is not limited to a visible body. Atmosphere, recurrent dreams, disturbances in animals, changes of voice and altered behaviour may precede the form later witnesses attempt to describe.
Signs of Presence

Within the tradition, the pattern matters more than an isolated disturbance: repetition, convergence and the impression that separate signs have begun to move with one intention.
Rites and Occult Traditions
Jewish and Christian traditions develop prayers, adjurations and exorcistic disciplines around these spirits. The texts emphasize authority and discernment rather than curiosity toward the possessing presence.
Protective, exorcistic, devotional and adversarial approaches may exist side by side. Their differences reveal how each culture understood the entity’s authority, danger and place in the invisible order.
Dangers
The danger lies in habitation becoming identity. The longer the presence remains, the more its desires are mistaken for the host’s own history and character.
The oldest warnings treat contact as consequential. The danger does not end when the apparition withdraws; it may remain as altered desire, damaged judgment, recurring dreams or a relationship that has begun to serve the presence.
Transformation Through History
The Gospel designation became a foundational category in Christian demonology. Later systems multiplied names and ranks, but the older term remains severe: the spirit is known by the pollution it carries.
Later literature and popular culture often magnify one feature while erasing another. The authoritative record must preserve those later transformations without allowing them to replace the earliest surviving identity.
