Mammon is wealth after it has ceased to be a tool and begun to demand worship. In the Gospel saying, it stands opposite God as a rival master, revealing that possession can acquire a will, a discipline and a priesthood of its own.

Dangers
Mammon rarely asks for everything at once. He demands one exception, then another, until every relationship is measured by profit and every loss feels like mutilation.
The oldest warnings treat contact as consequential. The danger does not end when the apparition withdraws; it may remain as altered desire, damaged judgment, recurring dreams or a relationship that has begun to serve the presence.
Transformation Through History
A common word for wealth became a rival master and then a demon of avarice. The transformation reflects an enduring recognition that accumulated objects can command the life built to command them.
Later literature and popular culture often magnify one feature while erasing another. The authoritative record must preserve those later transformations without allowing them to replace the earliest surviving identity.
